About the Convention

Since its founding in 1891, the IBEW has convened delegates from across North America to regularly set the bylaws which govern its existence and chart a course for the Brotherhood for the next several years. The week of Sept. 21, 2026, delegates will gather in San Diego, California, to conduct the business of the Brotherhood and to convene in solidarity, with a shared belief in the importance of working people to the futures of our great union and to the continued strength of our two nations. This Convention is mandated in Article II of the IBEW Constitution and governed by the policies and procedures detailed there.

At its founding, the IBEW had no choice but to organize for its survival. Growth was the only path to relevance — to power for working people in a nascent industry. Today, the IBEW is bigger, stronger and more influential than those 10 founders could have ever imagined, but it still finds itself in a fight to grow — to better represent its members and to bring more working people into the Brotherhood so they, too, can enjoy the wages, benefits and safety only a strong union can provide. Just like the founders, today’s leaders are committed to Powering a Brighter Future for the IBEW and for working people everywhere.

San Diego, CA

San Diego is a fitting gathering place for an IBEW on the move. Despite its location in union-friendly California, San Diego hasn't always been a union stronghold. But a decade of focus, solidarity and steadfast organizing has turned the city into a place where organized labor holds great influence and wields quiet power in the industries it represents. San Diego is a success story, just like the greater IBEW, which is enjoying unprecedented growth despite headwinds in many of its represented industries.
